On Saturday June 26, the Mitchel Elementary School was attacked by large wrecking machines. These mammoth yellow monsters reduced the main building to rubble in a matter of minutes. Granite City District 9 is not closing the school. They have big plan for renovation that include Air Conditioning. Mitchel was the last school in the district without the benefit of cool air in the summer.

Many people stop by to pay respects to the old building before it was removed to make way for the new. The attendees included students and staff both present and past.

I graduated from Mitchell School in 1979. Next year my daughter will begin kindergarten. I hope the memories she builds are as fond as mine.
